Choosing the Right Invertek Drive

Selecting the right Invertek drive is important to ensure your motor operates safely and efficiently. The first step is to check the motors nameplate for its power rating, voltage, current, and phase type. The inverter should then be matched to these requirements, alongside the demands of the application.

The environment that the inverter will be installed in is also an important factor. IP20 drives are designed for use inside of a suitable cabinet or control panel, while IP66 versions are better suited to more demanding environments and provide greater protection against dust and water.

If you’re unsure which Invertek drive you need, the Motors and Inverters technical team can guide you through your options and find the best-suited inverter for your application.

The Optidrive Range: Features and Benefits

The Optidrive range from Invertek is designed to meet the diverse needs of industries looking to optimise motor control with increased capability and energy savings. These variable frequency drives are available in different models to suit various applications, including the Optidrive E3, Optidrive P2, and Optidrive Eco.

  • Efficiency: One of the most significant benefits of the Optidrive range is energy efficiency. By adjusting the speed of the motor to match the requirements of the application, the Optidrive variable frequency drives reduce unnecessary electricity consumption. This can result in substantial cost savings, especially in systems where AC induction motors are running continuously or at partial load. By using the Optidrive system, companies can achieve energy savings of up to 60% in some applications.
  • Ease of Installation and Use: The Optidrive range is designed with ease of installation and operation in mind. Each model comes with a user-friendly interface, making it easy to configure and monitor the drive. The variable speed drives also feature plug-and-play functionality, reducing installation time and minimising downtime. Invertek ensures that the Optidrive range is intuitive to operate, which simplifies maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced Motor Control: Optidrive’s advanced VFD technology enhances motor performance, ensuring smooth and reliable operation. The variable frequency drives offer precise speed and torque control, which improves the overall performance of the motor and minimises mechanical stress. This capability helps extend the lifespan of both the motor and the driven equipment.
  • Compact Design: The compact design of the Optidrive range makes them ideal for applications where space is limited. Despite their small footprint, these drives offer powerful performance and can be easily integrated into existing systems without requiring significant space for installation.
  • Robust and Reliable: Invertek places great emphasis on quality and reliability. The Optidrive range is built to withstand harsh operating conditions and offers high protection against environmental factors like dust and moisture. This makes them suitable for use in a variety of demanding industries such as manufacturing, water treatment, and HVAC.
  • Connectivity and Communication: Many models in the Optidrive range come with integrated communication protocols, such as Modbus and CANopen, enabling easy integration into automated systems. This connectivity allows for remote monitoring and control, providing users with valuable data to optimise system performance and improve predictive maintenance.
  • Sustainability: Optidrive variable frequency drives are designed with sustainability in mind, contributing to the reduction of carbon footprints in industrial operations. By reducing electricity usage and optimising the performance of motors, Invertek’s products align with global sustainability goals and environmental regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an Invertek drive with a single-phase supply?

Yes. Invertek offers drives that operate from a single-phase 200-240V supply. Certain models can provide a three-phase output to a suitable three-phase motor, providing motor control to areas where a three-phase mains supply is not available. Invertek also produces an exclusive single-phase motor control drive for suitable applications.

Can an Invertek drive run a three-phase motor from a single-phase supply?

Yes, suitable Invertek drives can accept a single-phase supply and provide three-phase output for suitable motors. This is particularly useful when only a 230V supply is available but a three-phase motor is required. Always ensure that the drive and motor is correctly matched for voltage, current, power, and application.

Should I choose an IP20 or IP66 Invertek drive?

The best suited model will depend on where you wish to install the inverter. IP20 drives are generally designed to be installed inside of cabinets and protected control panels, while IP66 models offer better protection against dust and water, and generally perform better in more demanding environments.

How do I size an Invertek inverter for my motor?

The first step is to check the motor nameplate for its kW rating, voltage, phase, and full-load current. The inverter must then meet these requirements, as well as the demands of the application. Other factors, such as the type of appliance the motor is controlling (i.e. pump, fan) must also be considered.

Can you help me replace an obsolete Invertek drive?

Yes. If you have an older or discontinued Invertek drive, our team can help you find a suitable replacement. Just provide us with the existing drive’s model number, motor details, or a photograph of the nameplate, and we can help determine the most suitable current alternative. We’re also able to advise on compatibility of replacements for your specific applications.
